Our instructors are award winning trainers making them some of the best trainers in the world. They routinely receive high marks from their students, and work to provide top-notch training. Each of our instructors is certified in the classes they teach, and that goes for every single class! We could wax poetic about how skilled our instructors are all day, but instead of that we’re going to show you by highlighting two of our instructors a month, every month to showcase their hard work and talents. In this blog, we want to highlight James Hanavan, Microsoft Certified Trainer, Cisco Certified Systems Instructor, and Technical Instructor with New Horizons Learning Group.
James has been an instructor with New Horizons since 1995. As an instructor with a little over two decades of experience, James has assisted with the rollouts of several generations of Microsoft products. Remember Windows NT 4.0? James does. In addition to being a Microsoft Certified Trainer, he is also certified in Cisco as both a CCNA and a CCSI.
Along with his experience in technical training, he also has extensive experience working as an IT consultant, including in our own IT department. He has set up and managed our internal email systems since 2007. He migrated us from a legacy phone system to Lync 2010 and continues to support that as our Skype for Business implementation. So, when you call or email us to book your class with James, you will be using systems he set up and maintains. He implemented our internal System Center Configuration Manager deployment and uses it to deploy desktop applications and keep our desktop infrastructure up to date. He is also actively involved in our internal efforts to migrate our desktops to Windows 10.
James teaches classes on Windows Server and Client, all System Center servers, Exchange Server, and Skype for Business Server. He also teaches Cisco Routing and Switching courses.
Prior to joining the New Horizons family, James worked in customer service, and served in the United States Marine Corp as a Sergeant. He graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts degree
“I tell students what they need to know, as efficiently as possible. I equate new concepts with familiar old concepts, and make sure to avoid being monotonous.” James on his training philosophy and how he helps students learn the materials. He bases his teaching on a blend of theoretical and real-world examples. He pulls from his current and past work experience in the IT industry. The topics students learn in his classroom are the same topics James pursues in his free time, often making his job seem like more of a hobby. This enjoyment can be shared with student providing an inviting atmosphere to learning.
When James is not in the classroom, he mostly just spends time with his family that includes an 8-year old son.
Like many of instructors, James has several certifications and specialties to back up the content that he teaches. He specializes in, or is certified in the following:
