What is ITIL?

ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) is a set of detailed practices for IT service management (ITSM) that focuses on aligning IT services with the needs of the organization IT supports. There are five core volumes, each covering a different ITSM lifecycle stage. ITIL describes processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists which are not organization-specific nor technology-specific, but can be applied by an organization for establishing integration with the organization's strategy, delivering value, and maintaining a minimum level of competency. It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. 

ITIL is managed by AXELOS, and is part of their Best Practice Solutions portfolio, which are designed to help organizations become more effective across a range of key business capabilities including IT Service Management, project, programs, and security.

How Do I Get ITIL Certified?

Depending on what level of certification you are wanting to aquire you simply take the course, and then take the exam in order to earn the certification. The foundation exam is 60 minutes and comprised of 40 multiple-choice questions, 65 percent of the exam must be answered correctly to pass. The ITIL practitioner exam is comprised of 40 multiple-choice questions with a minimum score of 70 percent to pass. The intermediate exam consists of eight questions worth 5 marks each, in order to pass you must receive at least 28 out of 40. In order to become a certified ITIL expert you must obtain a minimum of 17 credits from the foundation, practitioner, and intermediate modules, and then pass the Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) exam to achieve 22 credits and gain your certification.

How Much Does ITIL certification cost?

The cost of getting ITIL certified will depend on what level of training you are undertaking.

How Long Does a ITIL Foundation Certification Last?

An ITIL Foundation certification lasts for 3 years, after which one would need to retake the exam.

The New ITIL Certification System


Each ITIL certification has been assigned a specific credit value, based upon their level of ITIL content. Upon successful completion of any ITIL examination recognized under the credit system, a student will be awarded both the certification and the credits attached.

The credits earned through this system can then be used towards the ITIL Expert level of certification, for which candidates must have earned a required number of credits from qualifications which cover the full spectrum of ITIL best practice.
